The clients had a lean-to that wasn't doing its job - an underperforming addition that created space but at a thermal price. They wanted to replace it with something considered, something that properly opened up their kitchen and dining space to the garden. They weren't after square footage for its own sake. They wanted a room worth being in.

The Brief

Replace a tired lean-to with a rear extension that would open up the ground floor, connect the kitchen and dining room into a single flowing space, and create a genuine relationship with the garden. The design had to feel resolved, not like an addition bolted on, but like a room that had always been there.

Context’s Approach

The pivot door is where the project begins. A large-format pivot door anchors the rear elevation and organises the whole space around a single generous gesture, the threshold between inside and outside made deliberate and considered. A secondary bench window sits alongside it, framing the garden at a lower level and giving the room a secondary layer of connection to the outside - the perfect space to read a book.

European oak hit-and-miss cladding wraps the rear elevation against the existing white render - a material contrast that is warm rather than jarring, and one that carries through into the interior. The exposed structural steelwork, painted orange, is left visible and celebrated rather than hidden - a flash of character in an otherwise restrained palette. The timber language runs continuously from exterior to interior, grounding the extension in a single material idea.

The Outcome

A room that earns its place. The lean-to is gone. In its place, a space with real presence - one that opens fully to the garden, flows naturally from the kitchen, and gives the house a heart it didn't have before.
